About this entry
The tragic suicide of a fellow tradesperson and friend prompted Jeremy Forbes to create HALT – a community initiative to support the mental health of local tradies.
Having worked in building and construction for 20 years, Jeremy was acutely aware of tradies’ reluctance to talk about personal problems.
He approached local hardware stores to hold ‘Save Your Bacon’ breakfasts, inviting tradies for a free egg and bacon roll and an opportunity to talk about mental health issues, work pressures and where to find professional help if they were struggling.
Four years on, HALT is a registered health promotions charity whose message has directly touched more than 7,000 attendees through breakfast events and presentations at hardware stores, TAFEs, building companies, sports clubs, men’s sheds and mental health conferences across Victoria and interstate. Thousands more have learnt about HALT through word-of-mouth and media coverage.
