The site automated an existing slitter and purchased a robot to remove the manual handling hazards involved with manual slitting of tin plate sheets for the Tapered Ends department. Operators within the Tapered Ends department would rotate every 4 hours in completing this task due to the risk identified through the site completed risk assessment. The automated system has now eliminated this risk as there is minimal human interaction in this process. The slit tin plate is used by the Tapered Ends department to load the presses and punch tapered ends into the plate.

Whilst PIHA have been safely using electric powered chainsaws for many years across our operations throughout Australia (and continue to do so), we recognised the value and importance of investigating suitable engineering alternatives to minimise the risks associated with cutting HDPE pipe, primarily to remove the operators from the “cutting zone”.
