We operate water and wastewater treatment plants in many of our 71 towns, utilise desalination technology, operate numerous recycled water schemes and run pipelines, dams, weirs and pump stations to service our customers. The workplace health and safety issue confronting the organisation involved a lack of compliance in the management of chemicals at workplaces.

Solving a workplace problem using - Eastern Tertiary Alliance - Baulderstone Pty Ltd & United Group Infrastructure Pty Ltd
Best Solution to a Specific Workplace Health and Safety Issue
The Eastern Tertiary Alliance (comprising Melbourne Water, KBR, Black & Veatch, Baulderstone and United Group) was formed in 2010 to deliver $418M tertiary treatment upgrade works at the Eastern Treatment Plant. The tertiary upgrade significantly reduced the impact of the plant’s discharge by upgrading the current effluent treatment from secondary effluent treatment to high quality, non-potable recyclable water. Amongst several large, functionally integrated civil, mechanical and electrical structures constructed there included a sludge handling system. The erection of the proprietary mechanical units was complex and required working at heights of approximately 7m. To overcome the working at height and penetration issues, the project team designed and constructed temporary access bridges that were tailored to suit the tight working conditions but also remove critical risks.

Along with this program were our 5 Safety Essentials, 5 statements that we believe if everyone followed would result in a safer working environment.
Callibration chock placement tool - Bluescope Steel
Best Solution to a Specific Workplace Health and Safety Issue
I'd like to nominate one of our Senior Process operators for developing a simple solution to a hazardous manual task. The task involved operators contorting thier bodies into an extremely difficult location to place calibration blocks into a steel strip surface conditioning mill. The task had been done this way for many years. The Senior process operator developed a prototype extension tool that would allow an operator to place the calibration blocks into the mill from outside the guarding and with minimal effort, once the prototype had been optimized using toilet rolls and broomsticks, an aluminium tool was manufactured and has been successfully in use ever since. Significant reductions in the risk operators are exposed was achieved with a very simple tool developed by the guys on the floor. A great example of what can be achieved when people challenge the way things have always been done in the past.
