Townscape New OHS Management System - Townscape Garden Managers

Best health and safety initiative in a small business (20 employees or less) - 2012 Awards

Townscape Garden Managers are a small family business. We specialise in commercial and industrial garden management. We have recently implemented a new OHS Management System.

What was the issue/s at the workplace?

Working with a number of large Property Managers we have a requirement to be compliant as a category 1 supplier with Cm3 System. This included things that were not already covered in our OHS Program including: Risk Management, Subcontractor Management, OHS Workplace Reviews, OHS Employee Reviews, Prestart Checklist for Tools, Return to work policy, Hazard/ Incident/ Injury Management and Reporting, workable JSAs, practical OHS meetings and inductions

What did you do to control it/resolve it?

We have implemented procedures and policies to integrate all of the above issues into our OHS Management System. We had a small business WorkSafe assessment in May (through WorkSafe and ERGOSH) and are currently implementing all recommendations. We are now working with all employees to train them on each aspect of the new system and finding practical ways to integrate into our daily work schedule.

Who did you talk to about the issue/s or who helped you resolve it?

We consulted with WorkSafe and had our small business assessment in May. We are currently implementing all recommendations.

What was the outcome? How is the workplace better now?

We are still in the phasing in part of implementation. We have been working on a monthly basis to find the most practical ways to implement the system. Our workplace has always been safe but now we actually have a system in place to ensure that everything is done properly and there are paper records of our progress. The most important changes are a workable JSA that we can use for renovations jobs and updating our vans with a folder that includes risk management, JSAs, incident hazard forms and MSDS.
