Safety Improvement Program - Pacific Services Group Pty Ltd

OHS Management System of the Year - 2012 Awards

The Pacific Services Group (PSG) comprises a group of dynamic and highly experienced electrical and communication contractors that together provide a national contracting solution for major construction projects and effective operational and essential asset monitoring and maintenance for clients across Australia.
At PSG we want our people to understand that all accidents are preventable and that there is no place for anyone to take short cuts and create an unsafe environment under any circumstances. To facilitate achievement of this objective, PSG has embarked on a Safety Improvement Program that provides safety leadership development and training for our people.

What are the key components of your management system and how long has it been in place?

Whilst the individual business units within the PSG Group have had established systems for many years the national system has been implemented for the past three years.
The key components of the system and reason for its success are as follows;
• Involvement at all levels within the organisation;
• Combining the documented system with the culture of our people; and
• Our attitude of always looking to improve.

Does your management system incorporate the elements of AS 4801? Y/N/Don't know.

Yes
Our integrated management system which encompasses quality, safety and environmental is based upon the requirements of AS/NZS ISO 9001: 2008, AS/NZS 4801:2001 and AS/NZS ISO 14001:2004.
Earlier this year we achieved national certification from NCS International. Refer Attachment A.

How does your management system integrate health and safety into your day to day business operations?

PSG is committed to creating an environment for the entire organisation, where safety is recognised as a critical success factor in our day to day and long term business objective.
Safety is a major factor within all stages of our processes from the initial enquiry, design and development, project delivery through to commissioning.
Safety is the “WAY THAT WE WORK”.

How were your employees engaged in the development and implementation process?

Consultation and communication is a major part of the system and includes the monthly safety meeting attended by the CEO, General Managers and HSEQ Managers through to the establishment of individual project requirements which involves all personnel working on that project.
Our national “Fix It Register” encourages ALL PSG employees to continually look for better ways of making it a safer place to work.

What were the results?

The end result for any OHS Management System is the safety of its people and statistically we have shown great improvements over the past three years.
Our lost time injury rate (LTIR) has dropped from 22.76 to 1.79. Refer Attachment B.

In conjunction with this we have achieved a great improvement in the safety culture within PSG. An initial survey was carried out when we embarked upon our “Safety Improvement Program” with a follow up survey once the program was implemented. The results were very encouraging.
