Traffic Management - Eaton Vehicle Group
Best solution to a workplace health and safety issue - 2012 Awards
Eaton Vehicle Group is a distribution warehouse supplying truck components and providing technical support to our customers across Australia and New Zealand.
What was the issue/s at the workplace?
Trucks, couriers, cars and forklifts on site mixing with pedestrians with no traffic management or procedures in place.
What did you do to control it/resolve it?
Eaton contracted a Health & Safety Consultant to assist with expert advice. The Health & Safety committee worked with the consultant and senior leadership team to develop a draft traffic management plan taking advantage of WorkSafe guidance material. Further consultation was held with all staff asking for input and feedback with draft plan being posted on the noticeboard for all staff awareness and consultation. Survey was also carried out over a week to gauge volume and type of traffic. Temporary measures were then put in place to ensure the new plans would work prior to final implementation.
Who did you talk to about the issue/s or who helped you resolve it?
We engaged a Health & Safety Consultant, consulted with employees, suppliers and also took advantage of the new networking group that we had initiated a few months earlier. We also gained advice from our major customer who already had traffic management in place.
What was the outcome? How is the workplace better now?
All incoming trucks and other vehicles are now entering our property in an organised manner with clear signage to ensure safe access and controlled traffic management. We now have procedures in place for loading and unloading taking into consideration pedestrians and drivers with safety barriers in place, ensuring that mobile plant and pedestrians do not mix.
